Girls Get Strong at CAC

08/11/2016 10:00 AM | Sarah Shalash

As an institution, CAC prides itself on having a faculty dedicated to not only teaching students but also improving their mental and physical wellbeing. Becky Riddle is just one teacher who goes the extra mile to educate and care for CAC’s students both inside and outside of the classroom. Wanting to increase the participation of young women in sports at CAC and hoping to provide them with more opportunities to learn about health and fitness, Riddle created the Girls Get Strong initiative. Girls Get Strong seeks to increase girls’ participation in sports by not only educating them about health and fitness but also increasing their confidence in their abilities as young women and athletes.

In May of 2016 GGS hosted a health and fitness conference that was attended by 95 CAC students in grades 5-12 and ten guests from Schutz American School in Alexandria. At the conference, personal trainers, experts in psychology and nutrition, and representatives from the Egyptian national track and field team and the local Nike+ training club spoke to the girls about health, fitness, and the value of athletics. The young women in attendance also participated in fitness sessions that used new and innovative exercise methods that are more effective and more fun than traditional sit-ups and push-ups. Students from the high school, coaches, and fitness experts from the community led sessions on barre, body attack, polymetrics, Zumba, and more.

The Girls Get Strong is still just beginning. Next year, GGS hopes to increase participation in its conference and to include more young women from schools around Egypt. Becky Riddle hopes that in the long-run GGS can provide regular opportunities for CAC’s young women to come together to learn about health and fitness and to excel as athletes.
